This presentation and subsequent discussion is designed as a seminar and will be limited to 
twenty (20) participants. 

The purpose of this presentation is to: 

 Provide an overview and basis for discussion for practicing clinicians regarding the abuse of, and addiction to, psychoactive substances by their clients

 Provide a forum for participants to share clinical experiences in the realm of use, abuse and dependency of psychoactive substances, including the impact on family, friends and loved ones

 Facilitate a discussion regarding the emotional impact on professionals who treat clients with substance abuse and addiction problems and how to manage the experience

Objectives: At the conclusion of this seminar, participants will be able to: 

1. Discuss the interaction of biological, social, and psychological factors that can lead to substance use and abuse

2. Discuss the disease model and its applicability to treating those with substance use disorders

3. Verbalize understanding of the common progression of substance use and ways in which progression is more rapid than usual 

4. List three (3) clinical assessment tools to assist clinicians in the identification of substance use disorders

5. Discuss the treatment options and the benefits of each in the diagnosis and intervention with clients with substance use disorders
