Within the discipline of clinical psychology, Police and Public Safety Psychology has been a recognized area of specialization since October 2011. The knowledge base generated from scientific inquiry into topics that are relevant to this specialty has led to the development of recommendations, best practices, and guidelines that are evidence-based.
This presentation will focus on the application of police psychology in general and within a local jurisdiction. To ensure the identified learning objectives are met, the presentation will highlight the operation and efforts of the Police Stress Management and Crisis Intervention Teams.
Workshop Objectives: At the end of the workshop, participants will be able to:
- Understand how psychology is applied when working with the police, and the challenges that are often encountered
- Understand the clinical conditions and biopsychosocial problems typically encountered, and the mental health resources to which police employees have access
- Understand the Crisis Intervention Team model and how it is applied
