The goals of this committee include bringing together individuals and resources from the academic, clinical and public sectors to advance the integration of psychological science and clinical practice. Below is information about our Committee Co-Chairs and members as well as brief summaries of upcoming science-related events and activities that may be of interest to DCPA members.


Committee Membership. Our Committee is Co-Chaired by Dr. Karen Shanor and Dr. Susan Czajkowski. Dr. Shanor is a clinical and neuropsychologist who teaches at Georgetown University, and is a former White House consultant and an advisory member of Discovery Channel Global Education. A frequent lecturer at the Smithsonian Institution, she is an internationally recognized expert in cultural neuroscience, the nature of consciousness, animal behavior, hypnosis and development of the “self.” Dr. Czajkowski is a Program Director at the National Institutes of Health, a health psychologist whose expertise involves understanding the connection between psychosocial factors, behavioral risk factors and cardiovascular health and who oversees large-scale programs of research aimed at developing and testing interventions to improve psychological, behavioral and physical health.

Additional members include Dr. Mallory Starr and Dr. Emma Grace. Dr. Starr is an internationally recognized expert in organizational development and a former clinician. He serves on a number of Professional Boards and as Special Consultant to the DCPA Board for Organizational and Professional Development. Dr. Emma Grace specializes in PTSD and other trauma-related disorders. She has research and rehabilitation experience in mass sociogenic illness and has traveled extensively including into war zones. Dr. Grace currently teaches at the Chicago School of Professional Psychology where she also chairs dissertations in the International Psychology Ph.D. Program. Dr. Grace has initiated our DCPA Book Club which is a great meeting place for psychologists and open to the public.

DCPA Book Club. Monthly meeting to discuss books relative to the scientific psychological community.

Philosophical Society lectures. For terrific lectures on general scientific topics, we recommend checking the website for the Philosophical Society of Washington. The lectures take place every other Friday at 8:00 pm at the John Wesley Powell Auditorium, adjacent to the Cosmos Club, 2170 Florida Avenue NW, Washington DC 20008. All lectures are free and open to the public. See http://www.philsoc.org for further details.


NIH Behavioral & Social Science seminars & conferences. The National Institutes of Health offers a variety of seminars and symposia on many topics related to behavioral health which are open and free to the public. If you would like to join an NIH list-serve to receive notices of upcoming behavioral science symposia, conferences, and other NIH-sponsored activities, please follow these instructions:

(1) Send an email from the address at which you would like to receive announcements. The email should follow this format:

The Subject Line should be blank.
The Message Body should read undefined SUBscribe BSSR-EVENTS-L [your full name]

The message is case sensitive, so capitalize as indicated! Don't include the brackets.

For example, for Robin Smith to subscribe, the message would read SUBscribe BSSR-EVENTS-L Robin Smith
